Prominent rights theorists like Gary Francione draw a bright line: The abolitionist position requires a vegan lifestyle. Francione argues that if we believe animals have a right not to be property, then consuming or using any animal product is a violation of that right. The strength of this position is its moral consistency; it offers a clean, principled framework. The weakness is its political impracticality in a global economy deeply dependent on animal agriculture, and its perceived extremism, which can alienate mainstream society.

The moral acceptability of using animals for human amusement has plummeted in recent decades.

However, critics within the animal protection movement identify a fatal flaw in the welfare model: the concept of “humane slaughter” is an oxymoron. Furthermore, welfare reforms can create a “moral licensing” effect, where consumers feel ethically comfortable consuming animal products because the label reads “free-range” or “cage-free,” while the animal still faces an early, violent death. Welfarism, in this view, does not challenge the property status of animals; it merely polices how owners treat their property.

Lazzat al-nisâ (The pleasure of women)

Bibliothèque nationale de France

In Muslim India numerous treatises were written on sexology. Many of them included prescriptions concerning problems dealing with virility or, more precisely, with masculine sexual arousal. The Sanskrit text which is considered the primary source for all Persian translations is known as the Koka Shastra (or Ratirahasya) —derived from its author’s name, Pandit Kokkoka—, a title that was later given to all treatises in the genre. The Koka Shastra by Kokkoka was probably not the only such text known to Muslim authors.

The Lazzat al-nisâ is a Persian translation of the Koka Shastra, which contains descriptions of the four different types of women and indicates the days and hours of the day in which each type is more prone to love. The author quotes all the different works he has consulted, which have not survived to this day.
