Their early sound was a groundbreaking hybrid. The band debuted in 1979 with the single "All Night Party," a track described as "as astringent as anything else out at the time". However, they quickly distinguished themselves by incorporating aspects of other forms, most prominently a horn-driven, brass-spiked funk. The band's name is taken from a lyric in Brian Eno's song "The True Wheel", hinting at their art-school origins and avant-garde inclinations.
